Shizuo sat down with him, taking a bite of the cake. “It was good…” he answered,
“My brother came home and brought me this cake. We sat and ate a few slices and that was about it. ” He took a sip of the milk. “It wasn’t much, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.” He drew silent and cut into his slice again taking a large bite from it. It always became a touchy subject when his brother was being mentioned, this making him take a larger bite then usual.

“Kasuka has been pretty busy lately from what I can see.  I see his face on posters all over Ikebukuro. Looks like he’s having a lot of success, you must be proud.”  He noticed that Shizuo was probably not too fond of talking about such a personal topic.  Shinra wasn’t the best at reading when he was talking too much, especially with Shizuo.  ”Anyway it sounds like you had a good time.  My last birthday I had to work all day.  I didn’t get to do anything too special, but that’s fine, it was just another birthday.”

Shizuo quickly accept the topic change from his brother. Still thinking in the back of his mind, yea, he was actually proud of Kauska.
“Yea, just another birthday. What about Celty? Is she too busy for birthdays too?” finishing his cake he sat down his fork and finished off his milk.

He finished the piece of cake in his mouth.  ”I was out late, by the time I got back it was close to bedtime anyway.  She had had a long day too doing whatever she was doing at the time.  But she did leave me a little note and dinner in the fridge.”  He lost himself in the thought.  Even when they were both busy they kept each other in mind.  He loved that aspect of their odd relationship.  Realizing his attention was drifting he quickly gained it back with a smile.  ”If it had been more important to me then I’m sure she would have made the time.  We’re always busy anyway so we’re used to it.”  He took his last bite of cake.

Shizuo sat back and pushed his plate towards the middle of the table. Things just got silent for a second. He was never the one to speak out first unless if he really wanted to. What next… he thought, wondering if shinra was going to sugest something to do. Or should he? “I usually don’t make the move to come over just anyone’s house. not sure what came over me but I thought it may be okay to try something different on my day off. I don’t know. I hope I’m not…you know…taking up your only free day.” He grabbed for his empty milk glass.

“Of course not Shizuo! I’m really happy that you wanted to stop by.” He smiled a big smile that probably would be obnoxious to everyone besides maybe Celty.  He stood up and took thier plates to the sink.  Upon setting the dishes down he turned around quickly “Would you like to play a video game?  I’ve got a Wii.”

Shizuo stood up from the table and straightened out his shirt. “The wii huh?” . He never really played video games. He didn’t own any or ever thought to buy any type of system. But hey, it seemed  like it could be entertaining, thats what he came over for anyhow, right? “Yea, ok.” he said, and made his way into the living room with Shinra. He took a seat on the couch and waited to see what they had to do next.

Shizuo sat back on the couch with his head rested against the back of the sofa. An unlit cigarette loosely rested between his lips. In the background there was a low mumble coming from the tv that wasn’t turned up loud enough to hear. He had a day off and nothing to do with it, and he wondered if he should spend the day alone, or perhaps go out somewhere and enjoy the weather now that it wasn’t so cold. He pulled his phone from his pocket and flipped the cover open, clicked on the contacts button and scrolled down through the few names that were in there. He must have went through the few names about three times before he gave up and set his hand down beside him with his phone still in it. He looked up at the ceiling briefly before opening his phone again and clicked on Shinras name and held it up to his ear as it started to ring.

After looking through his calender located next to his work station, Shinra heard a ringtone he didn’t recognize at first coming from his cell phone. The small screen read Shizuo Heiwajima.  “Shizuo?  That’s odd, I wonder if he and Izaya had another fight.”  He opened the phone and placed it to his ear.  ”Hey Shizuo, need something?”

He sat there, it took him a second to say something. He wasn’t use to doing the phone call thing. Only now did it go through his head that he had no idea what the hell he was doing, or thinking. “Hey, you busy?” He said briefly.

“Uhhh no I’m not.”  Never had Shizuo called in such a leisurely fashion before.  Shinra was pleasantly surprised, confused, but happy none the less.

“Would you— uh..Could I-” His words tailed off, not knowing how to say what he wanted.  He grumbled at himself and stood up from the couch. He shut his eyes and grabbed a hold of the back of his neck “Listen, I don’t got nothin to do today ” he said. “So I was thinking about coming over or something, if you don’t got any plans.”  First attempts to hang out ever, better late then never.

It filled Shinra with such Glee that after all this time they would finally hangout as friends (well friends was a strong word but to Shinra it seemed just right).  ”Yeah that would be great!  Celty’s not home yet so it would be just us two if you’re cool with that.”

“Alright, I’ll be over in a few moments. See ya.” He hung up the phone and put it in his pocket.  He though for a moment that he should bring something over as a small gift for having him. He thought for a moment….two moments… He made his way into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Half of a birthday cake still sat there from his recent birthday celebration that he shared with his brother. “eh..This should do.” he said, as he took the cake out and cut a few slices to bring over. He wrapped them up and put them on a small plate and made his way out the door.

He made his way to Shinras place, it wasn’t to long until he arrived at his apartment door. He knocked, and waited for the door to open.

Shinra closed his phone, looked at it for a second, and smiled. “This should make for an interesting evening, though I have no idea what to do.”  He stood up from his rolling chair and wondered into the living area.  Leaning up against the couch he thought to himself an evening’s worth of bonding activities.  Even in high school he never really spent much time with his “friends” outside of class besides for clubs or academic activities.  So, maybe he was a little nervous even if he felt pretty uppity about the situation.

After some time he heard Shizuo’s knock at the door.  Opening the door Shinra sported a large smile “Hey Shizuo!”

Shizuo raised his hand and waved as the door opened with a small friendly smile “Hey, Shinra.” He walked inside and turned to face him.

he was feeling a little awkward. He never really tried hanging out with anyone before other then his brother, celty and tom once in a while. Especially Shinra. He always kept him self at a safe distance from people, but for some reason he felt like this could go smoother then he imagined it to.  What could go wrong any how? He was surprised to see that Shinra always was dressed for work. I guess with his job, you never would know when someone could come through. Little random thoughts like that went through Shizuos head as he entered the apartment.

“I brought some cake”, he said holding up the plate with a few cut slices on it.  “I thought I should have brought some over for you and Celty.”

Shinra, as usual, was overwhelmed by Shizuo’s thoughtfulness.  ”Oh thank you!  Celty doesn’t eat but I’m sure she’d appreciate the thought, I know my stomach will.  If you want I’d be happy to share some if you’re hungry.”  He walked into the kitchen welcoming Shizuo in.

He was happy that Shinra enjoyed the gift. He casually walked into the kitchen along with shinra. “Sure I’ll have a slice if you having one.” since it was offered he wouldn’t turn it down, although he still had some more cake at home, and apparently Celty didn’t eat cake, he supposed he could take a slice without it being rude.

“I haven’t had any cake since Christmas.  I don’t have much of a sweet tooth since sugar to some extent causes cavities but on special occasions I do like to indulge myself.”  He took out some plates and forks.  ”Would you like some milk with your slice?”

Shizuo paused and looked at Shinra, “Yea, milk would be great” he said with a small smile. As Shinra got everything together he began to think about celty. He always thought it was interesting how these two lived together, celty always seemed so busy with work. In fact, both of them were always busy with work. Shinra was always so different. Unlike him, Shizuo had quite a sweet tooth, and never once worried about having cavities.

Shinra poured them both generous glasses of milk.  Shinra was a skinny guy.  He ate small portions due to working so often without breaks.  But pouring a nice tall glass of milk and indulging himself was like taking a mini vacation. “How was your birthday?  Did you do anything fun?”  He sat down and took a sip of milk.

Shizuo sat down with him, taking a bite of the cake. “It was good…” he answered,

All I’ve ever wanted was to be loved and accepted.
Accepted by myself, and by the people that I love.

When the world pushes you down and makes any of that impossible, its hard to accept any of that. You cant deny the truth of who you really are and what you really want. So It’s best to just take what you can and deal with what the world dumps on you.

People will do just about anything to get out of paying their dept.  Around the holidays, peoples stories become more ridiculous than usual. They whine,  complain, even cry to make up some lame sob stories. I hear all the  stories, well, until I’ve heard enough to where I either need to step  out or step in.  Shopping, snow, and all this cold weather. I don’t see how people can  be joyful at the most miserable time of the year. But they do. People  come together and are happy, with the ones that care for, and their  family or loved ones. Presents, smiles, parties, lights, festivals, and what  have you. All that, I’m here listening to their stories. With Tom-san.  Its a week before Christmas. I’ve been thinking again a lot these last few weeks, but I’m feeling slightly joyful. Somehow.  It must just be ‘that time of year’.
